Our History

Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) was established in 1998 with the acquisition of the 99-year lease for Gold Coast Airport from the Federal Government, marking the beginning of our journey and laying the foundation for future growth.

In 2005, QAL acquired Townsville and Mount Isa airports, marking a significant step in the growth of the organisation and broadening its role in connecting regional Queensland. The purchase of Longreach Airport in 2012 further strengthened the network and cemented QAL’s role as a key contributor of economic growth for communities across the state. Together, these airports are critical pieces of infrastructure that support their regions and contribute to QAL’s overall success.

Since then, QAL has delivered major terminal redevelopments, runway and airside upgrades and aviation precinct developments across the network. These projects have supported the growth of passenger numbers, enabled the introduction of new airlines and routes, and increased capacity for both domestic and international services.

QAL has also advanced sustainability initiatives, including solar installations, improved environmental management and accreditation under the Airports Council International Airport Carbon Accreditation program.

Today, QAL operates a portfolio of four airports that are integral to the communities and economies they serve, with a clear focus on long-term growth, resilience and sustainable development.

Since QAL acquired Gold Coast Airport in 1998, QAL has continued to make major investments in infrastructure, acquisitions and developments that have strengthened our airports and the communities they serve.
