Longreach Airport
Longreach Airport is the gateway to central western Queensland, which is home to numerous iconic outback experiences, and has strong links to the start of the aviation industry in Australia.
The airport largely services the central west region, covering Longreach, Winton and Barcaldine townships.
QAL acquired a 99-year lease over the facility from Longreach Regional Council in October 2012.

Longreach acts as a gateway to the Outback, as well as Townsville and Brisbane.
Milestones
Since QAL acquired Longreach Airport in 2012, the following significant milestones have been achieved:
- 2016 - Wildlife proof fencing enhanced around runway operations
- 2016 - Installation of 396 solar panels on the roof of the terminal building to reduce reliance on mains power and offset carbon emissions
- 2022 – Celebrated 10 years of QAL ownership
The Destination
The Longreach Region in Central Western Queensland is situated 1,176 kilometres north west of Brisbane, and covers an area of 40,638 square kilometres. The larger region encompasses the outback townships of Longreach, Ilfracombe, Isisford, and Yaraka and the entire population of approximately 4,300 people.
Longreach serves as the administrative centre for the surrounding region with its largest economic sector being the traditional mainstay of agriculture, accounting for 45% of all business establishments in the Longreach local government area.
Longreach benefits from a focus on Outback Queensland’s visitor economy and is home to the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, and Qantas Outback Founders Museum.
