Environmental Management

Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) is committed to managing the environment in which our airports operate in a sustainable and responsible way. We acknowledge that airports are complex environments, connected to natural ecosystems, neighbouring communities and cultural values. We strive to meet our responsibilities under law, reduce impacts and support long-term environmental health.

Airport Environmental Legislation

QAL airports in Gold Coast and Townsville primarily operate under the Commonwealth Airports Act 1996, Airports (Environmental Protection) Regulations 1997 and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, which are administered by the Commonwealth government.

Gold Coast Airport also comprises of freehold and/or leasehold land surrounding the commonwealth airport lease. These areas are not regulated under the Airports Act and rather the usual commonwealth and state legislation applies.

Mount Isa and Longreach Airport operate in accordance with relevant national, state and local environmental laws including the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth), Environmental Protection Act 1994 (QLD) and Local Government requirements

As part of developing our Airport Master Plans for Gold Coast and Townsville airports, QAL prepares an Airport Environment Strategy (AES) for each. The AES provides a comprehensive framework for identifying, assessing and managing the environmental impacts of airport activities, including statutory requirements under the Airports Act 1996 (Cth). It guides airport operators, tenants and contractors in implementing measures to prevent, mitigate and monitor environmental impacts, covering areas such as biodiversity and habitat, water and soil management, air quality, noise, cultural heritage, climate and resource management, and the handling of hazardous materials.

Our Environmental Approach

Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) is committed to developing and operating its airports and precincts in an environmentally responsible manner as detailed in our Environment Policy. This approach promotes transparency, accountability and a consistent approach to environmental management across all airports.

QAL’s Environment Policy sets out the principles and commitments that guide how we manage the environment. It outlines our approach to protecting natural values, preventing pollution, complying with legal and voluntary requirements, and continuously improving environmental performance. The policy also ensures that environmental considerations are embedded into planning, decision-making and daily operations, supported by training, resources and clear responsibilities for staff and contractors. By making the policy publicly available and regularly reviewing it, QAL maintains a consistent and accountable approach to environmental management.

By adhering to these commitments, QAL embeds environmental stewardship in all aspects of airport management. From operational decisions to infrastructure planning, these principles guide sustainable practices that balance operational growth with community and environmental responsibility.
